Contaminated Sites Remediation [+ Show][- Hide]
In British Columbia, a contaminated site is an area of land in which the soil, groundwater or sediment contains a hazardous waste or substance in an amount that exceeds provincial environmental quality standards. Many sites in the province became contaminated during past industrial or commercial uses, resulting in chemicals and other toxic materials being spilled or deposited on land.Environmental remediation is the removal of these contaminants from the environment for the general protection of human health and the environment or from a brownfield site that is planned for redevelopment.

Erosion Prevention and Sediment Control Monitoring [+ Show][- Hide]
Erosion prevention and sediment control is also known as storm water runoff control, and consists of a number of techniques that can be used to prevent soils from eroding and to capture soil particles that do erode before they enter the waterways. These techniques are also called Best Management Practices, and must be chosen carefully for each situation.Sediments in waterbodies can severely impact aquatic systems by reducing the amount of sunlight reaching aquatic plants, can suffocate fish, bury feeding sites and spawning areas and interfere with a fishes’ ability to navigate the waterways.
In Canada, the Fisheries Act prohibits the deposit or release of a deleterious substance to fish-bearing waters. In high enough concentrations, sediment is considered a deleterious substance, and in most municipalities in the lower mainland, bylaws are in place making it illegal to allow sediment laden water to enter municipal storm drains or ditches. Therefore, anyone who undertakes a construction or landscaping project that could cause erosion should undertake erosion prevention before beginning their project.
